Young Professionals Lunch: Mentoring vs. Coaching

From time to time, ALL leaders struggle with creating engagement…for themselves and their teams.  A significant key to addressing this problem is to rely less on mentoring behaviors and begin developing a coaching mindset.  First and foremost, coaches SERVE.  Yes, they tend to bring out the best in their people, but not always the way you think they might.  Too often, leaders feel they have to carry the majority of weight and/or have all the answers.  While that may feel like a “servant” mindset, it is, in fact, the opposite of one.  And it impacts engagement.  During our time together, we will draw a distinction between mentoring and coaching mindsets and the impact they have on engagement. You will leave with important skills to help you coach and, more importantly, serve well.

About Chris Coyne
Chris Coyne, Founder and President of Modeof8™, has been a leadership educator, coach and practitioner for nearly three decades. His experience crosses organizational cultures, from corporate and military training environments to the university classroom.
He founded Modeof8™, a leadership development and coaching enterprise based on a simple belief – that every leader, at some point in their career, needs help creating engagement in their organization. More than half of his 26+ year military career was spent in senior-level advisory and leadership capacities, as well as in classrooms and training institutions, where he prepared leaders at all levels for increased responsibility and effectiveness. Chris holds several academic degrees, including a Master of Science in Educational Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He received national coaching certification from the MMS Institute in the Fall of 2009.
